For anyone on the Peninsula who desires all things sui generis in clothing and accessories, you don’t have to travel to NYC or trek to San Francisco. We have it. We found it. The treasure trove has been unlocked and found. But how?
While walking around Carmel’s Farmers Market one balmy Thursday afternoon, Sylvie’s window display caught my eye. As an admitted addict of black, rubber, mesh, sustainable silks and linens, I had finally hit the jackpot in ….CARMEL!!!? Yes, this boutique has landed and deservedly arrived. Unparalleled textiles, shapes, silhouettes, and not your run-of-the-mill tourist threads have beamed themselves onto our huddled enclave. If you’re looking for a safe bet, this boutique is NOT for you. If you’re looking to follow the rhythm of your own visual drumbeat, then it’s heaven on the corner of 6th and Mission.
So what happened when I walked in? I felt the pinch of my bank account contract and expand. Then my eyes were pleasantly sated with refreshingly loose silhouettes that luminously caress the outlines of any and all body types. Sylvie’s attention to detail and fabrics have made her boutique one that signifies a statement that fashion needs right now: Styles that are absolutely ageless and timeless. What remains is a brilliantly curated selection of clothes and accessories that are enigmatically sexy. What all these styles require is an established and cultivated individuality, and most of all, graceful poise. No wallflowers need apply here!
CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU GOT STARTED IN FASHION?
I started as a student in art, then went to work for I. Magnin and moved to the flagship store in San Francisco. During that time I found a fashion design school I could afford called Pacific Fashion Institute. They taught pattern drafting, fashion illustration, and sewing.
DO DESIGN YOUR OWN CLOTHES?
Yes. I’m going to be putting out my own line of shirts this summer, manufactured in Turkey. The line is called SYLVIE.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND SYLVIE’S UNIQUE BOUTIQUE?
The concept was to be able to bring European clothing to the local client. When I opened the store in Carmel Plaza in 2002 I introduced lines from Sweden, Poland, and Italy, and it’s been a wonderful success since then.
Australia’s BANANA BLUE is just one of the many lines you can find at SYLVIE UNIQUE BOUTIQUE
WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO CARRY CERTAIN DESIGNERS IN YOUR CURATED STYLE SELECTIONS?
It’s just my eye. I have a strong feeling for European design. The styles, textiles, and everything about it is highly unique to me. Also the jewelry is extremely important. All the jewelry I carry is handmade. Also, I only do two looks per style.
WHICH DESIGNERS HAVE ALWAYS INSPIRED YOU?
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO WOMEN WHO ARE LOOKING TO BE MORE ADVENTUROUS WITH THEIR STYLE SELECTIONS?
First and foremost, always feel comfortable in your clothes. Also, don’t be afraid to try something new. Always try to stretch your wardrobe and never be confined to your friends’ comments or concepts. Go boldly for the look you want to achieve.
