As this Fashion Editor walks around Carmel and the rest of the Peninsula, it’s hard to ignore the design innovation and risk-taking architecture that abounds and expounds out the corner of my awakened eyes. Nevermind the stark, lunar landscapes accented by our trademark Cypress trees or the inner workings of those Pebble Beach mammoth homes that allude all of us into heady states of desire. One thing remains glaringly and crystal clear for those coming to visit from around the world; Interior Design is not the end of the sentence, but a gateway into endless journeys of creative dialogue and 21st Century lifestyle.

When speaking of innovation, we cannot ignore Martin Perri. As a Carmel and San Francisco mainstay to the craft and technique of Interiors, Perri has garnered the reputation of  making ideas…or shall we say….dreams come true. What’s even more special, Martin Perri has a unique love for Carmel and the Peninsula. As the tide turns on bigger, biggest, and more luxurious, Perri has an innate pulse on the future of what’s to come;

“I think the current modern trend will continue as generations change into wanting a cleaner, simplified lifestyle with the attention and emphasis on the environment and the impact that today’s products have on that environment.”

And with that, we’ll let the creatives do the talking:

Can you tell us about the Martin Perri brand, or the the “Martin Perri” touch in particular?

Martin Perri Interiors’ style is cohesive and tends to be monochromatic in tones with emphasis on implementing pattern, texture and color for a soft elegant and timeless interior. Color is accented through the use of art and subtle accessories. Style tends to implement contemporary and classic traditional details blended harmoniously together to achieve a unified and balanced interior.

Is Interior Design more form and function or more an expression of one’s true lifestyle?

Interior Design incorporates various attributes including form, function and aesthetics in order to interpret the values and qualities of those who inhabit the space. Individual clients’ perception of color, texture and lifestyle are elements in determining the key components which help reflect the identity of those who inhabit the space.

What are the most popular interior design services among your clients?

Most of my projects begin during the remodel or new construction phase which begins from the conceptual phase established by the architect through the final phases of design prior to construction. I engage alongside with the architect and other professional consultants to compliment the vision for the project and assist in the specific details in order to achieve a comprehensive design well thought out in spacial requirements, functionality and aesthetics. I also have projects that are of a more defined scope; for example Custom Interior Furnishings, where we integrate the existing Architecture with the new Furnishings to complement one another , creating a cohesive esthetic.

Does Carmel and the Bay Area have a particular look, charm, and interior design philosophy that’s different from the rest of the world? How would you describe this?

I am always fascinated by the diversity of the architecture throughout the Bay Area, Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula. Each project and home is inherently unique. Carmel, specifically, has a “Look and Feel” that is unique to its own; the architecture is comprehensive with various styles. What is unique is the topography, environment and size of the typical homes in the village itself. My projects have an incredible range of style, scope and size; and I enjoy the variety and customization that comes with each and every home I design. The attention to detail and character sets it apart from the rest of the world.

Where do you see the trends of Interior Design headed?

I think the current modern trend will continue as generations change into wanting cleaner, simplified lifestyle with the attention and emphasis on the environment and the impact that today’s products have on the environment. I anticipate also that the rebirth of existing products will continue to become more main stream in an effort to reuse what would otherwise be discarded back into the environment.

What are some of the qualities that make an ideal client for Martin Perri?

The most important aspect of working with any individual client is having their faith and trust in what your trying to achieve for them. The most successful projects are those in which the client places their trust and confidence in the Interior Designer, while the Designer is also appreciative of the client’s needs, expectations, lifestyle, and preferences. They should feel completely comfortable in who you are as a Designer, the projects that you have in your portfolio, and the Designer’s ability to achieve the project priorities and esthetic.

The Martin Perri portfolio sites an amazing range of styles from transitional, to Mediterranean, to Modern. Which style gives Martin Perri the most joy and satisfaction while completing a project?

Interior Design and Architecture have always been of great interest to me, mostly because I appreciate and find beauty in all styles and the uniqueness each brings. This is why I enjoy working with all styles; it brings variety to my work everyday. I find each project challenging and interesting, which inspires me to avoid repetition and strive for authenticity in all my work.  I feel most comfortable working within unstructured specific Periods of furnishing styles, which provides the opportunity to be creative and recommend distinctive pieces that complement one another and add interest to the environment.

What are Martin Perri’s favorite brands, products, and interior design essentials/tools that he utilizes for each project?

I rely on the products, materials, and manufacturers that provide consistency in quality, material and workmanship, which are key in this industry. Most products that I routinely work with are from manufacturers that have been in business as long as I, or longer. I trust and recommend these particular products, because the manufacturer, trades person, or artisan has demonstrated a high level of quality, dedication and consistency. I understand first hand their commitment to resolve issues if they arise in a timely and professional manner, which enables the project to develop smoothly, while also contributing to the overall success of the design intent.

Finally, where does Martin Perri love to wine and dine in Carmel after a long hard day?

Favorite eateries? Where do I begin? I love that we have so many fantastic options for dining, entertaining and relaxing in Carmel. If I were winding down from a long day, I would likely opt for something more casual; some of my current favorites include the Treehouse Café and Dametra. For Happy Hour you cannot beat the bar food at Forge in the Forest. For fine dining and special occasions, I enjoy trying new eats and restaurants, and I am still making my way through all of them! In work or play, variety is the spice of life!
